Snow sitting on your roof edge is where ice dams begin. We pull the first few feet back from the eave with a roof rake — from the ground, never from on top of the roof — which takes the weight off and removes the fuel that feeds a dam. It is the cheapest winter insurance there is.

Why not just let it melt?
Because the melt is the problem. Snow on the warm upper roof melts, runs to the cold eave and refreezes into a dam, and the next lot of meltwater backs up under your shingles. Taking the eave snow off removes what feeds it.
Do you get on the roof?
No. We clear from the ground with an extension rake. Walking a snowy or iced roof is how people get seriously hurt, and it is not worth it to anyone.
How often does it need doing?
After any big dump, and any time you can see a thick load built up along the eave. Some winters that is twice, some winters it is five times.
Will the rake damage my shingles?
Not when it is done properly with the right head and a shallow angle. Done badly it strips the granules off, which is exactly why this is worth paying someone who does it all winter.
